Four details help us to assess your enquiry straight away and to give you an honest ballpark figure while we are still on the phone. First, photos: two or three shots from different angles, plus a picture of the base of the trunk in the case of trees, and one of the junction with the house for paving and patio areas. Second, the area in square metres, or the length in linear metres – for a hedge, fence or wall the height matters too; a rough estimate paced out across the garden is perfectly fine, as we take proper measurements during the site visit anyway. Third, the location with the district and postcode, plus a note about access: can we get onto the plot with a trailer, mini digger or tipper, how wide is the gate, is there a way in from the street? Fourth, your preferred date or time frame – and, if you have one, a budget range. That way we can tell you what is realistically achievable within it, instead of planning past what you actually want.

We reply to every enquiry within 24 hours as a rule – and even if there is a project we cannot take on, you will hear that promptly rather than after three weeks of silence. We then arrange the free on-site visit, which in our core area usually takes place within a few days. During that visit we look at the soil and the sub-base, check falls, drainage and access, take measurements and clarify whether any permissions are needed – under your town's tree protection bylaw (Baumschutzsatzung), for instance, which applies in Düsseldorf and Cologne from a trunk circumference of 80 cm, in Wuppertal from 100 cm, and which in Meerbusch requires notification six weeks before felling. After that you receive a written fixed-price quote in which materials, labour, machinery and waste disposal are itemised separately – labour is shown as its own figure, which is what you need if you want to claim the German tax relief for tradesmen's services (§ 35a EStG). The site visit and the quote are free and without obligation – including if you decide to go with another firm afterwards.

One note on timing: for spring work such as a new lawn, turf or a full garden redesign it is worth enquiring as early as January to March, while winter service contracts are best agreed in September or October. Fallen or split trees and other hazards, by contrast, we treat as a priority – in cases like that please ring us rather than send an e-mail.
