Gardens in Ennepetal: soil, climate and local character
Ennepetal sits on the transition from the southern Ruhr area to the Bergisches Land and the Märkisches Sauerland, between 170 and 390 m above sea level. The narrow valleys of the Ennepe, the Heilenbecke and the Hasperbach have steep flanks, and between them run the ridges of Rüggeberg, Königsfeld and Oberbauer. More than 40 % of the town's area is woodland – for gardens that means a great many hillside plots, shady positions along woodland edges and north-facing banks, and, in the districts close to the forest, the occasional problem with deer browsing.
The subsoil consists of slate, greywacke and sandstone, and around Milspe and the Kluterthöhle cave of massive limestone with karst features. Add to that the cool, wet Bergisch climate with well over 1,000 mm of rainfall a year – windier up on the heights, with fog and cold-air pockets in the valley. Tree protection and local rules in Ennepetal
Ennepetal currently has no tree protection bylaw (Baumschutzsatzung), as of April 2026. Together with Schwelm and Breckerfeld it is one of the municipalities in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis without such a bylaw; a citizens' petition to introduce one was debated in the main council committee (Hauptausschuss). Felling on private ground is therefore usually possible without municipal consent – unlike in neighbouring Wuppertal, where trees are protected from a trunk circumference of 100 cm.
Federal law nevertheless applies: under § 39 of the Federal Nature Conservation Act (Bundesnaturschutzgesetz, BNatSchG), hedges and woody plants must not be cleared or cut back hard between 1 March and 30 September; careful shaping and maintenance cuts remain permitted.
