Wuppertal is our closest large neighbour: Langerfeld, Oberbarmen and Nächstebreck border directly on Schwelm and Ennepetal, and we reach Elberfeld in roughly 15 to 25 minutes via the B7, the A1 or the A46. That is why you will find us working right across the valley city – from Vohwinkel and Sonnborn through the Briller Viertel, the Zooviertel and the Ölberg to Barmen, Heckinghausen and Beyenburg, and just as often up on the heights of Cronenberg, Ronsdorf, Küllenhahn, Uellendahl and Katernberg.
Anyone with a garden in Wuppertal knows the recurring issues: steep slopes, steps and retaining walls, shallow stony soils and a great deal of rain. Our work is set up for exactly that. Gala Bau Kurt looks after private households, residents' associations (Eigentümergemeinschaften) and property managers with everything from a single source – garden design, paving and patio construction, slope stabilisation and drainage through to tree care and garden maintenance, always after a free on-site visit and on a fixed-price quote.
Our services in Wuppertal
-
Walls & slope stabilisation in Wuppertal
Dry-stone walls, L-shaped concrete elements and gabions hold sloping gardens in shape – with frost-resistant foundations and backfill so that water can drain away.
-
Drainage & rainwater management in Wuppertal
With 1,100–1,200 mm of rain a year, drains and channels are often the single most important measure against waterlogging and moss.
-
Patio & terrace construction in Wuppertal
A patio on a slope needs a load-bearing sub-base, a clean fall and often a retaining wall – in porcelain stoneware, natural stone or timber.
-
Paving & pathways in Wuppertal
We lay driveways, paths and steps on sloping plots over a compacted crushed-stone sub-base so that nothing sinks or shifts later on.
-
Garden maintenance in Wuppertal
Regular care for hillside gardens in Elberfeld, Barmen or Cronenberg – as a maintenance contract or a one-off visit, with green waste disposal included.
-
Lawns & turf in Wuppertal
Against moss and waterlogging we improve the soil, top-dress with sand and use shade-tolerant seed for north-facing banks – or lay a new turf lawn.
-
Tree felling & tree care in Wuppertal
We check the tree protection bylaw (100 cm trunk circumference), prepare the exemption application and fell safely in sections, even on tight sloping sites.
-
Property & grounds maintenance in Wuppertal
For property managers we look after outdoor areas all year round – with winter service on request, which matters especially up on the heights.
Gardens in Wuppertal: soil, climate and local character
Wuppertal is a long, narrow valley city in the Bergisches Land: the river Wupper runs from Vohwinkel through Elberfeld and Barmen to Oberbarmen, with steep north- and south-facing slopes rising on either side – from around 101 m at Müngsten to 350 m at Lichtscheid. Many plots sit on a hillside and are only usable with retaining walls, terraced levels and steps. The bedrock belongs to the Rhenish Slate Mountains (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge) with slate, greywacke and sandstone, and a band of massive limestone with karst features runs straight through Elberfeld and Barmen. The soils are mostly shallow, stony and rather acidic; up on the heights of Cronenberg, Ronsdorf and Küllenhahn conditions are harsher and windier than down in the valley.
With roughly 1,100 to 1,200 mm of rainfall a year the climate is genuinely wet – locals like to say that children in Wuppertal are born holding an umbrella. Waterlogging, moss in the lawn, erosion on slopes and deep shade on north-facing banks are therefore permanent themes here. We plan every project with proper falls, a load-bearing sub-base and drainage that actually works. On the positive side: in 2025 an ESA satellite study ranked Wuppertal as the greenest large city in Europe.
Tree protection and local rules in Wuppertal
Wuppertal has had a tree protection bylaw (Baumschutzsatzung) since 29 October 2019. It protects broadleaf trees, yews, ginkgos and fruit trees (with a crown base of at least 1.70 m) from a trunk circumference of 100 cm measured at a height of 1 m; multi-stemmed trees are covered as soon as two stems reach 50 cm each. Felling and heavy crown reductions require an exemption permit from the city, submitted with a site plan and photographs. The threshold is therefore higher than in Düsseldorf or Cologne, where it starts at 80 cm.
In addition, the Federal Nature Conservation Act (Bundesnaturschutzgesetz) prohibits the cutting back of woody plants from 1 March to 30 September under § 39 BNatSchG; careful maintenance pruning remains permitted year-round. Before any felling we check whether your tree falls under the bylaw, and on request we prepare the application documents for you.

Typical projects in Wuppertal
In the hillside villa quarters – the Briller Viertel and the Zooviertel – the work is usually about restoring old dry-stone walls and steps, shaping large hedges and caring for mature trees. In the dense nineteenth-century quarters such as the Ölberg and the Nordstadt it tends to be small rear courtyards, front gardens and the shared outdoor areas of apartment buildings.
In Cronenberg, Ronsdorf and Beyenburg, with their traditional Bergisch slate-clad houses, slope stabilisation, natural stone walls, gabions and patios come first; in the detached and terraced housing areas of Uellendahl, Katernberg, Nächstebreck, Küllenhahn and Langerfeld it is driveways, patios, fences, turf and drainage against waterlogging. For property managers we also take on grounds maintenance and winter service – winter is noticeably harder on the heights than in the valley.
Travel times and appointments in Wuppertal
Our base in the Ennepe-Ruhr-Kreis lies directly on the Wuppertal city boundary: Langerfeld and Oberbarmen are about 5 to 8 km away, Elberfeld roughly 12 to 15 km. For Wuppertal we therefore charge no separate travel costs – the site visit and the quote are free, and even smaller maintenance appointments fit neatly into our rounds.
After your enquiry we normally reply within 24 hours. During the free on-site visit we pay particular attention to access and gradient, because on many sloping plots the approach decides whether we work with a mini excavator, a powered wheelbarrow or entirely by hand – and that goes straight into your fixed-price quote. Consultation is available in German, Turkish and English, so English-speaking residents can discuss every detail in their own language.

Frequently Asked Questions – Wuppertal
Do I need a permit to fell a tree in Wuppertal?
Very often, yes. The tree protection bylaw (Baumschutzsatzung) covers broadleaf trees, yews, ginkgos and fruit trees from a trunk circumference of 100 cm at a height of 1 m, as well as multi-stemmed trees with two stems of 50 cm each. In those cases an exemption permit with a site plan and photographs is required – we measure the tree during the site visit and prepare the paperwork for you on request.
Do you charge travel costs for jobs in Wuppertal?
No. Wuppertal borders directly on Schwelm and Ennepetal, and Langerfeld and Oberbarmen are only a few kilometres from our base. The on-site visit and the quote are free, and travel is already included in the fixed price.
My plot in Ronsdorf is on a steep slope – can you get machinery in?
Usually yes. A mini excavator and a powered wheelbarrow cope with narrow access routes; where that is impossible we work by hand, section by section. During the site visit we clarify access, gradient and space for materials, so the extra effort is priced into the quote from the very start.
Why is my lawn in Wuppertal so mossy, and what helps in the long run?
Heavy rainfall, shallow acidic soils and shade on north-facing slopes are ideal conditions for moss. What helps permanently is better drainage, sand top-dressing, adjusted fertilisation and a shade-tolerant grass mix – and where moss has taken over completely, a new turf lawn on a free-draining base.
How long is the wait for an appointment in Wuppertal?
We usually reply within 24 hours and can normally offer a site visit within a few days. Maintenance work and smaller construction jobs often start within one to three weeks, while larger patio or wall projects are scheduled together with you. In spring it is well worth enquiring early.
